Drive

Drive is an awesome slick, dark, ride through the life of a sympathetic psychopath, set to the sound track of a pulsating electronic 80s revival. Full of tension, incredible cars, some fantastic driving sequences, and a gritty unflinching display of violence, Drive makes for a thrilling watch. Ryan Gosling is amazing as our convincing and believable anti-hero protagonist, and the film's central love story makes me think of a perverse cross of Dexter and Punch Drunk Love.

Thoroughly enjoyable! Go see it!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Saw Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (SH:AGoS) the other day - great film! If like me, you're into Guy Ritchie's signature cinematic direction, enjoy Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law's chemistry, and love a good romp, then I highly recommend this film!

Plenty of action and a well paced narrative practically guarantees a pleaser!

Snapshot

Currently in rotation: Dark Souls and pickup games of Dungeon Defenders. My brother and I are also playing the odd game of Borderlands too - an oldie but a goodie!

Rage, tips

There are many resources out there for Rage to help you through problematic areas, and the game itself allows for a variety of combat strategies. However, one thing I found particularly helpful in the latter part of the campaign on Normal difficulty, and again on a second playthrough on Insane, is that wingsticks are an incredibly powerful and versatile weapon.

  1. In open areas, it is entirely possible to retrieve a wingstick automagically
  2. On exposed (ie helmetless) foes, wingsticks are a one-hit kill
  3. In closed areas, it is entirely possible to retrieve a wingstick manually when stuck in an enemy's head - you just have to be quick as they stumble forward and pull it out before they fall to the ground
  4. When reloading, a wingstick is the perfect inter-load weapon on melee rushing enemies
  5. With advanced wingsticks, you may get a 3 for 1 deal!
In summary: I <3 wingsticks!

Rage

So, played through the Rage campaign the other day, and I have to say, I really enjoyed the whole experience. Expecting the age-old hum drum First Person Shooter (FPS), I was pleasantly surprised by its driving component, Role Playing Game (RPG) influences, and variety of mini-games - and of course its visual fidelity is second to none. The art direction never got tired or stale and made the most of an impressive palette of colour. Of the many post-apocalyptic titles on the market today, Rage actually stands apart.

If you haven't already checked Rage out, now is the perfect time to pick up the demo or just head on out and buy it.
