Snapshot

Just finished a run through of Rage - great game, more later - and losing myself in Dark Souls. It's just so much fun in a very perverse kind of way ...

Puscifer!

Cool, saw Puscifer Fri night. Great show, Carina Round opened and provided supporting vocals, Maynard and co offered an exciting and truly alternative aural and visual experience. From their surreal introductory desert scene to their live reinterpretations of studio work to their chill moment before the closing encore, we were on our feet through the whole concert.

I was also quite surprised by the eclectic mix of fans in attendance. Goths, alts, rockers, and everything in between and of all ages were present. While most were there for Puscifer proper, some were not - and somewhat upset by the atypical presentation (eg 3 whining fan-girls 2 rows back).

Anyhow, awesome show. If Puscifer comes to town, be sure to make parole and see them!

Reminiscing ...

Sigh, something this morning got me thinking of this ...

The Immortals

Saw The Immortals, not bad, not great. It was fun, visually gritty and appealing, and they didn't shirk at gore. It just felt a little weak in narrative, like the main theme (of living righteously) wasn't well represented, not as well as - and the comparison will be unavoidable wherever you go - 300, which was so singular and effective in its direction and execution.

Either way, The Immortals is an entertaining film. If you liked 300, The Immortals is bound to please.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, tips

Before leaving Deus Ex: Human Revolution (DE:HR) forever, thought there were a few things worth mentioning.

It is very possible to get most (if not all) achievements/trophies on a single playthrough. You can also get nearly all augmentation upgrades too.

The single most important strategy is to: Play on Hard and stealth takedown every target you can.

More specifically, I would recommend spending your first few Praxis points on the following augmentations
  1. Cybernetic Arm Prosthesis, Move/Throw Heavy Objects
  2. Hacking Capture, Capture 2
  3. Hacking Capture, Capture 3
  4. Hacking Fortify, Fortify 1
  5. Hacking Fortify, Fortify 2
  6. Hacking Fortify, Fortify 3
  7. Reflex Booster
Your first Praxis point comes as a free-bee during the Sarif Industries incident. Once you get it, spend it on strength. This allows you to move objects (like automated turrets!) and get places you otherwise wouldn't be able to (undetected).

If you were able to takedown every Purity First enemy, obtain the Smooth Operator and Ghost experience bonuses, and hack every terminal up until Zeke Sanders, then you should be getting your first level up, and another Praxis point to spend! Begin popping these into Capture and Fortify augmentations. Hacking terminals and doors are a great way to earn additional experience, and there are many doors and terminals in DE:HR :)

Lastly, I mention Reflex Booster. This is a great augmentation, and you should get this before engaging any hostiles in Detroit. Not only does it look incredibly cool to takedown 2 opponents simultaneously, but there is also a nice little experience bonus awarded for it!

By the time you leave Detroit, you will likely have been everywhere, have everything, and have all augmentations that you actually need to complete the game. For instance, Capture 1-5, Fortify 1-3, Reflex Booster, some stealth, and maybe some inventory, depending on how you choose to spend your points. Yep, there is that much experience to be had in Detroit.

Happy hunting!

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Wow, Deus Ex, it's been a while. I still remember playing the original Deus Ex back in the day, and much of what made the original so memorable has survived to this latest iteration - with a few impressive improvements along the way.

I really enjoyed its open design, exploration rewards, and also its new compelling narrative structure. A big surprise was the intimate interogation/persuasion mechanic. Those sequences added a new dimension to the gameplay and were engaging. More than combat, I felt like I actually interacted with and affected the game world.

Whether that feeling was perceived or actual, I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed myself with Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Can't wait for the next instalment!
